the year in 360°

Hypnotic. Cinematic. Great. In the city. That's what this year was about and this is the soundtrack to this: the song of the 2012 by Sam Sure & Giacomo. Good. Blend. Good. Year.

Please meet the director of the video Richard Nockles and have a look at the production company Yellow Bird. For the interactive Dark Inside video visit the band's website.

I need something, anything, someone

under their reign

The best things are those unexpected. And when I think about all the concerts of this year, the most memorable, with the smallest yet the most devoted audience, in the coldest yet the cosiest venue and a good friend by my side paying an unexpected visit, was the one of Café de Abejas: a band to watch in 2013. Witty and sharp. Let's be faithful to them, in a real way.

The video was directed by Laura Reunanen and Juha Reunanen.

do not resort to stronger wine, my love
under my reign superbly you shall bloom (...)
the orbits do their dance, and here we are
the music stops, the dawn is gray again
insufferably close
insufferably far
i never was so hungry for the pain
(...) so marry and make merry as you please
be faithful in your fashion, your design

The Emma Gaala Nominations (Finnish music industry awards) were announced some weeks ago and I was pleased to see the work of Sami Korhonen for the best artwork. Combined with the hazy flow of Delay Trees' guitars and vocals, it's a perfect way to tame this winter. It was also good to see the band live last week playing together with their Soliti colleagues Big Wave Riders. Good. Vibes.

rearrange your philosophies

Musicians teach no nonsense, I tell you. You can learn a lot from Asa and no wonder that musically she blends things like a pro. But that's what happens when you've been exposed to such artists as Marvin Gaye, Bob Marley, Aretha Franklin, Ebenezer Obey, Sunny Adé, Fela Kuti, Lagbaja... The list just keeps going on and couldn't get more positive. Well, after all: Nigeria is the happiest place on earth. So as a Yoruba saying goes: Jimoh to ma l'oyin, Alamisi le yan ma ti mo, which roughly translates as: "If a Friday is to be sweet, you'll know by Thursday." I always knew that there is something special about that day :) Good. Night.

Ain't I A Woman?

I hesitated for a long while. I thought that this time I'd prepared myself but you can't simply do that. I knew that the moment I press the play button something unearthly beautiful would fill the space around me. Like it was last time. Well, and so it did this time as well. Nobody ever helps me into carriages, or over mud-puddles, or gives me any best place! And ain't I a woman? Look at me! Look at my arm! I have ploughed and planted, and gathered into barns, and no man could head me! And ain't I a woman? I could work as much and eat as much as a man - when I could get it - and bear the lash as well! And ain't I a woman? Sojourner Truth, read the whole speech here.

beginning with C

November. Fog. That's the sweetest thing. I am surprised this band beginning with C appears here only now even though it's been in my player for years. "The great thing about Camera Obscura is that they both celebrate and comment on that idea of what pop actually is. The pop song in a way is (...) the perfect encapsulation of the giddy excitement and the giddy disappointment of love itself. That's why Camera Obscura is such an extraordinary pop group." There are albums that are supposed to be discovered, bought or revisited at certain time. Just like Graham Coxon's A+E that I was supposed to buy earlier. But then again - there are no coincidences and one shouldn't plan so much. I didn't plan to reach for Sting's ...Nothing like the sun until December this year. always there to remind me

So the world’s first colour motion picture was filmed in 1902 as I found out today through Explore. I sincerely thank Edward Raymond Turner for the three-colour motion picture system and I suppose I'm not the only one. I run across many great visual discoveries during this weekend among them works of Imogen Prado which I am very happy to share. Blurred. Misty. Vapory. Wonderful. Enjoy.

"My style of editing, using an array of my own stock footage of anything from plastic glitter spiders to trains and roses, worked well visually with the song. I love playing with different mediums of footage, especially Super 8, because of the wonderful grain and the fantastic colors. It was easy to synthesize my visual aesthetic of swirling colors with footage I took of Sharin and Sune."

some people like their oysters raw

It was a typical wet and windy London Winter's day made for staying indoors but Darius and Oshan, with Matt and Joe, were eager to busk for the crowds at Columbia Road Flower Market. Escaping the rain, after some cheeky negotiating with the owner, the guys performed in a tiny nook of a market stall Oyster Bar for customers and passers by. Read more on the The Turbans' session here

Some people like their oysters raw; and for them your job is easiest, for you have merely to pick out a dozen natives from the barrel, swill the brine from them, and place them, with a piece of parsley or cress, upon a plate. But for those who took their oysters stewed, or fried - or baked, or scalloped, or put in a pie - my labours were more delicate. Then I must open each oyster, and beard it, and transfer it to Mother's cooking-pot with all of its savoury flesh intact, and none of its liquor spilled or tainted. Sarah Waters, Tipping the Velvet

a good (night) song from Poor Moon

into blessed nothingness

Dizzy with light, we dipped into that enormous book of holidays, its pages blazing with sunshine and scented with the sweet melting pulp of golden pears. Bruno Schulz

Please meet the director of the video Maxime Loisel. Montag's Phares is out now.

Bruno Schulz, August

Thus my mother and I ambled along the two sunny sides of Market Square, guiding our broken shadows along the houses as over a keyboard. Under our soft steps the squares of the paving stones slowly filed past - some the pale pink of human skin, some golden, some blue-grey, all flat, warm and velvety in the sun, like sun-dials, trodden to the point of obliteration, into blessed nothingness. (for the translation of the whole chapter click here)

blue Monday

This melancholy London - I sometimes imagine that the souls of the lost are compelled to walk through its streets perpetually. One feels them passing like a whiff of air.
William Butler Yeats

That crazed girl improvising her music.
Her poetry, dancing upon the shore,
Her soul in division from itself
Climbing, falling She knew not where,
Hiding amid the cargo of a steamship,
Her knee-cap broken, that girl I declare
A beautiful lofty thing, or a thing
Heroically lost, heroically found.

No matter what disaster occurred
She stood in desperate music wound,
Wound, wound, and she made in her triumph
Where the bales and the baskets lay
No common intelligible sound
But sang, 'O sea-starved, hungry sea.'

Here's a retrospective view: video from Kapela Ze Wsi Warszawa that was nominated to Yach in 2008. Please meet Yach Paszkiewicz, the father of the festival. Spiritual revival to you all! Good. Vibes.

Please meet the director of the video Jacek Kościuszko and see more of his works here.

Dear diary, I got a bit scared yesterday. And I strayed. Luckily my older sister came to town.

Please meet the director of the video Jamie Travis and see more of his visual works here.

In need of morning yellow vibes. This one works quite effectively as my morning music espresso. Compact and essential.

a band in our cellar

It actually can get better. As long as we stick to Denmark and the colours in the air.
A powerful day closed by The Rumour Said Fire. Good. Night.

Please meet the directors of the video Graham Dorey and Andreas Munksgaard.

a good (night) song from Anna Calvi

after 27 | still 27

Twenty-seven days of August loaded with a lot twists. Now all behind. Managed to solve a few mysteries of today, fought back successfully Tuesday's boredom. All with good people around. Now closing the day and happy to discover another collaboration of  Them Bird Things with Lawrence Dolkart. They match. Excellently.

See more works of Lawrence Dolkart here and read more on Robert Johnson here.

good (night) song from Violas

A new band to watch and to close the day with. Violas are releasing their new EP Nos Somnia tomorrow. What a dreamy start of the last week of August. Good. Night.

There was this abundance of sun that I was puzzled by today. I got stuck by the seashore. Recorded a few sounds. There were no violet colours. And then the rain came.

dreams-come-true gig

"You're late", she said.
"According to whose clock?", in my time zone I was perfectly on time. A warm late summer evening and a concert a few blocks from my place. So why worry?

jazzpospolita

Sketching out a sneaky plan of visiting Warsaw later on this autumn. Sketching out a storyboard. Picking up a suitable note. Feeling small. Yet with strength.
Jazzpospolita, here I come.

"Zoe Keating playing her cello in the middle of San Francisco International Airport. On her way to play, Zoe opens up about the places she's been fortunate enough to visit and play, because of her music. A cello festival in Beauvais, the opera house in Sydney, Zurich, the New Mexico desert for the gasoline-laden simulation of a nuclear bomb, the list goes on." Read more on the story here

no flagman ahead

From the depth of my player I dug out old tunes of Tab Two. Overwhelmed by the sultry surroundings. Now with these trumpet and bass sounds things feel crystal clear.

back again, into, under, far in between, through it...

Terence Blanchard is the inside man of the movie sounds. He's edging the grid lines. Following the rule of thirds. Impeccably. Sharply.

(...) life and death, energy and peace. If I stop today it was still worth it. (...) The pains that have burned me and scarred my soul, it was worth it, for having been allowed to walk where I've walked, which was to hell on earth, heaven on earth, back again, into, under, far in between, through it, and above. It felt long to wait for Yeasayer's new album. Now it feels more tranquil when it's finally available.

on corner stones

I felt it all during Feist's concert at Flow. But then I flowed completely at St Vincent's performance. I was twisted away by the funnel cloud of her music. And so will you with these glasses and saving Jesus on Parisian roofs.

She's stunningly talented, beautiful and has great aesthetic taste. What else one should need? Oh yes, she's Canadian. Feist.

a good (night) and awesome tune from Francis Bebey

This good night treasure is played on sanza (via Awesome Tapes from Africa).

a room for London

Speaking of going somewhere: London is obviously always a place to go :) Yesterday I teleported myself there through a live stream of Django Django's concert. Tonight I wish to be there to see Slow Club. And tomorrow as well as Moshi Moshi informed about their free gig for BT London Live! For now let's just take a tour in this most intimate venue in London: A Room for London. Oh yes, it starts brilliantly with Canvas and then revolves around sounds from Between Sheets of Imogen Heap. See the Imogen's creative moments in the Room here.

The old river in its broad reach rested unruffled at the decline of day, after ages of good service done to the race that peopled its banks, spread out in the tranquil dignity of a waterway leading to the uttermost ends of the earth.

the colours you hear

So it spreads the colours around you. Pick up the one you hear and sketch.
Do you see how these sounds blend with vision? Oh, it's wicked! Tick, tick, tick, tick...

next summer

It's been a surprisingly great Tuesday given the fact I have a pretty unidentified problem with this day. Even newspapers were more interesting. Although it felt in the morning that summer had really overslept today. I have been striving for some light the whole day. Here it comes: Slow Club. Accurate and unmistakable, as usual. They never let me down.

The video was directed by Charles Watson, Suze Olbrich and Mike Bradley and edited by Sarah Grant from London Sessions Productions.

I know I will be saved, 'cause I always have believed
that there's something more for me when I go.
And there's a city that will heal me and help me clear the lumps out of my throat.
I think that next summer, if we're all still alive, you should try,
we should try to jump into some water and focus on getting high.

más y más

That's a marvellous and soothing duo for a Sunday afternoon: Buika and Chucho Valdés.
And so I blend all my jazz, soul and blues feelings with it. More and more.

Se me hizo fácil borrar de mi memoria
a esa mujer a quien yo amaba tanto.
Se me hizo fácil borrar de mí este llanto
ahora la olvido cada día más y más.

longevity of summer

Speaking of long-lasting summer: I dare to say this summer will be a longevous one even though one may never actually count on it. Yeasayer is however making this happen anyway.

Please meet the creator of the vignette Yoshi Sodeoka.

summer time

I still have summer in my mind. The outside world helps to keep this image. And so does this split single by Top Sounds and The New Tigers. So blue blue and full of sand. Good. Songs. Good. Night.
